Business as Usual During Plank Road Reconstruction

What you need to know when traveling to Can-Weld via Plank Road

Plank Road reconstruction in Sarnia has been delayed by material shortages connected to the devastating winter storm that hit Texas in February 2021.  Hopes are to complete the project, but on-going delays are still in the forecast .

Plank Road will be widened, adding turning lanes at McGregor Side Road and adding wider paved shoulders. The current water main is also being replaced as part of an ongoing project. The road is expected to remain open while water-main work is done, including along Gladwish Drive to help improve water quality and pressure in that area. However, Plank Road will be close to traffic when actual road reconstruction begins at McGregor Side Road so it can be done as quickly as possible. Sarnia awarded a $3.8-million contract for the 1st phase the estimated $8.1-million project to Birnham Excavating Ltd, focusing on the span between Indian Road South and McGregor Side Road. An additional $4.2 million grant from the federal and provincial governments was approved in 2020 to assist with the total costs. A separate project pending city counsel is to improve a number of culverts along the Cole Drain on the southwest side of Plank Road. The goal/aim is to have the culvert work down at some point during this Plank Road Reconstruction between McGregor Side Road and Highway 40.
